Displacement nodes are fun, but I've only used them for making natural-looking terrain so far. I never thought it would be worth it to try it with a more geometric texture like the sci-fi panels because I couldn't imagine it maintaining those hard edges. Decided to experiment and see. I like being wrong sometimes. I can see a lot of potential applications for this. It'd be great for close-up exterior shots against giant ships or stations like the Death Star surface, especially if the camera moves fast enough that you don't notice the lack of real detail. It could also work as the ground level for a sci-fi city shot.
With that, I made a Borg cube. Accidentally at first, honestly. My enjoyment of the Star Trek franchise is...well...even calling it "casual" feels like it would be overstating it. I like it well enough, I just never got INTO it like I did with Star Wars. That being said, once I made what basically amounts to "cube covered in sci-fi greebles," it took very little more to make it a Borg cube. Make the metal textures darker, make the lights green, done.
